The City of Banská Bystrica
The city of Banská Bystrica is located in the central Slovakia. It is situated on the banks of the Hron river, surrounded by mountains Kremnické Vrchy, Veľká Fatra and Nízke Tatry (see the map).
The city has been a historical, cultural and economical center of the region since the Medieval times. The privileges of a royal town has been granted to Banská Bystrica already in 1255 whereas history of the settlement dates back to the 9th century. Banská Bystrica, with its current population of over 80,000 inhabitants, still plays a key role in the region and ranges among the largest and most important cities in the country.
