The European Council of Doctoral Candidates and Junior Researchers (Eurodoc) has adopted its first general statement on equality in academia at its Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Copenhagen, on 9 August 2025. The full statement is available on Zenodo.
Eurodoc has long been committed to diversity, as reflected in various policy papers and initiatives. However, this statement represents the organisation’s first comprehensive position specifically addressing equality issues in academia, with a strong focus on the situation of early career researchers (ECRs).
The statement underlines that ECRs already face structural power imbalances within academic systems. Belonging to one or more underrepresented or marginalised groups introduces additional layers of disadvantage, creating intersecting barriers that can significantly hinder academic progress and professional development.
Eurodoc reaffirms its role in standing up for all researchers by addressing these inequalities and by drawing attention to groups that are often overlooked in current diversity discussions. With this statement, Eurodoc strengthens its commitment to promoting a more inclusive, fair, and supportive academic environment for all early career researchers across Europe.
